Converting Files to Photoshop Files
Photoshop doesn’t load files directly — you open a file (or a set of files) and work on it from there. You can open a wide variety of file types (including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, and DNG), but in most cases you need to convert the file before you can edit it in Photoshop. Several free and inexpensive photo editing programs also offer conversion, including GIMP (more on GIMP later in the chapter) and IrfanView.
Saving a Photoshop file
Photoshop is a completely self-contained program that contains all the files you need to edit images. After you save the file, you can open the image in Photoshop or any other program you like. You can also copy the Photoshop file to another location and rename it if you want to use it in a different image.
Many Photoshop tutorials give an example of saving a file after you’ve made a change. To save your image, follow these steps:
1. Choose Image⇒Save and select a destination file.
The Save As dialog box, shown in Figure 5-1, appears.

2. Select the file type you want to use from the File Type drop-down menu.
Select PNG-24 if you want to save the image in 24-bit PNG format. Select PSD (Photoshop Document) if you want to save the file in a Photoshop file (.PSD). If you’re saving a JPEG, the file type will be offered automatically.
3. Choose a file name from the File Name text box and choose a location.
You can also add keywords to your image to help you find it later.
4. Select whether or not to create a file backup.

To download Photoshop Elements, click on “Download Photoshop Elements”.
There are three options available: download the program to the desktop, save it to your “Saved” folder, or send it to your computer via the cloud. Click “Download Photoshop Elements” to save it to your desktop.
If you choose to save the file to the “Saved” folder, you will find the file on your desktop.
If you choose to send it to the cloud, you will see a drop-down menu with two options: “Save to my Creative Cloud”, or “Download it to my desktop”. Choose “Save to my Creative Cloud”, and you are prompted to choose the size of your download.

Adjust Opacity of Filter. You can change the opacity (or transparency) of the effect. With some effects (like Highlights and Shadows), you may be able to just increase the opacity. With others (such as Bevel and Emboss), you may need to increase the amount of lightening or darkening to the desired value.
You can apply filters to any of the layers on your document, as long as they are not masked. The filters, however, work only on the currently selected layer. When you are finished with the effect, you need to release the layer so you can apply another one.

On the Layers panel or on the Viewing area of the Layers panel.
On the Panel Bin.
On the Home tab’s panel.
On the Utilities panel.
In the Layers panel, you can apply effects by using the Layer Effects option. In the upper-right corner of the Layers panel, shown in the margin here, you see a triangle pointing to a dotted box. Click this box and the new Effects panel appears.
