A new paper published in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials presents methods for depositing a variety of materials, including transparent conductive oxides and polymers on 3D printed objects. It is the first report of fabricating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into conductive textiles that are suitable for flexible electronics.
When it comes to making conductive, transparent objects, the first material on which everybody would like to be able to print (aside from biological) is undoubtedly conductive ink. The ink needs to be a solid, workable compound that can be safely printed on a wide variety of substrates, and the chemical pathways leading to conductive forms must be controllable and scalable. A good ink needs to be able to produce uniform films with predictable electrical properties.
These insights led one group of researchers to develop a transparent polymer film that is conductive and flexible. Their method is similar to inkjet printing, in which a liquid polymer is sprayed through a nozzle on a substrate. However, instead of a liquid, the polymer is a solid and the material printed is cured. They use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as the polymer substrate and conductive inks made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silver nanowires. The resulting films are smooth, transparent, flexible, and conductive.
Preliminary tests by the scientists using these conductive PET films on printed circuits show that they can be used to electrically connect the conductive inks, and that the electrical properties of the films are consistent with those of the inks.
Other potential applications for these conductive PET films include medical imaging and monitoring, including wearable bioimpedance sensors and health monitoring devices.
