Histogram The histogram is a graphic that allows you to see the brightness range of your image. The chart shows the density of tones in an image. The lighter the tone, the more “shadow” in the photo, and the darker the tone, the more “light” in the photo. The darker tones may indicate overexposure, but they may also indicate that you have a dull or flat image. Figure 9-2 shows the histogram of a typical image. You can alter the appearance of the histogram by choosing different preset views. **Figure 9-2:** The histogram is a tool that helps you assess the tonal quality and exposure of your images. Image toning The toning feature, found under the Enhance section of the Edit menu, allows you to correct the exposure, contrast, and brightness of your image. In other words, by using the toning feature, you can bring out the best in your photographs. There are many other settings available when you edit your image. You can find those settings under the same section of the Edit menu. After you use the toning feature, you have the option of choosing from the two basic preset views, the Curves and Levels. The levels view adjusts the contrast of the image based on the toning of the image. The curves view, on the other hand, adjusts the overall brightness of the image using a series of sliders. Figure 9-3 shows the settings of the two basic preset views. You can also use the dialog box shown in Figure 9-3 to change the toning settings. Don’t use the toning tool too much. You can easily have an oversharpened image by increasing the exposure without addressing the contrast. **Figure 9-3:** The Curves and Levels settings are basic toning options for your image. Black-and-white conversion You can convert your image from color to black-and-white by using the Black and White adjustment tool. You can also convert images in grayscale. In addition to converting your image, you can alter the saturation, or the color of the black and white version of the image. Figure 9-4 shows the Black and White adjustment window. **Figure 9-4:

Elements also has a bunch of powerful templates that you can use to create a new layout or remove the ones that you don’t want. Introduction: Starting with the Elements 11.0.2 release in 2019, Adobe has now included a dark theme, in addition to two new themes. On top of that, the photo libraries in Elements can now be filtered by albums. However, Elements still doesn’t have what Photoshop does in terms of pre-built filters and presets. You can always make your own presets, but it isn’t as quick to do in Elements as Photoshop. We’ll show you how to create custom presets in this article.
